A nightclub in Montreal, has specifically put a ban on overweight women, leaving a lot of club goers and partiers upset.

The invitation was posted last week on the Facebook page of Muzique, a posh nightclub on St. Laurent Blvd., and included the ban on “fat girls,” followed by the emoticon of a winking smiley face.

Although a Montreal nightclub is distancing itself from an invitation on its Facebook page that specified “NO FAT GIRLS ALLOWED!!!!!!!!!!,” people familiar with the local party scene say clubs regularly, if not so overtly, discriminate based on looks all the time.

Club Owner Stefano Apostolakos:

“Everybody knows. Clubs are selective. A nightclub that wants to attract a certain kind of crowd will never openly turn people away based on weight, he said, but if people don’t fit in with the club’s look, a bouncer can still find some excuse to turn them away -whether it’s a long wait time, an expensive bottle service fee or claiming the club is at capacity,”

The party was to celebrate the birthday of one of the club’s partners on Saturday. The invitation was taken down on the weekend.

“When I saw it, I freaked out. I was livid,” said one plus-size woman who received the message as a member of Muzique’s Facebook group.

Speaking on condition that her name not be used, the woman said her weight has never stopped her from going out, but she won’t be visiting Muzique if it discriminates against people who are overweight.

“Good old Uncle Sam will stage attacks … that’s how they keep the slaves in line,” the libertarian radio host says during a rant on his show. “We have to wake up and face the fact that we have a criminal government.”

Jones, who sits at the helm of an independent media empire, is arguably the nation’s premiere purveyor of what could be called paranoia porn.

“World government means world tyranny run by a scientific dictatorship of control freaks that want to carry out forced population reduction,” he explained.

The criminal government is just one of many conspiracy theories Jones espouses — although he thinks that term belittles his reporting. He also believes that the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center were an inside job, that President Barack Obama is an “unconstitutional criminal” and that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) runs concentration camps.

“They [FEMA] have designation sports stadiums,” he said matter-of-factly, “They have designated fields, they have designated closed down prisoner of war camps for the American people during a civil uprising.”

You can count on Jones to push the envelope. Take his stance on the government poisoning the water. “I have all the other government documents where the government proposes — or government think tanks propose — poisoning the water to dumb down the population to make them more easy to manage,” Jones said.

People who monitor hate groups say they’re extremely worried about Jones’ growing influence. His six-day-a-week radio show and webcast reach an estimated one million people a day. On YouTube and elsewhere, Jones estimates 200 million people have seen his various documentaries, like “The Fall of the Republic,” “Endgame: Blueprint for Global Enslavement” and “The Obama Deception.”

Critics Say Jones Incites Anger

In 2002, Richard McAslin, allegedly a Jones listener, snuck into a men’s club in California that Jones has called, “a haven for the global elite,” carrying a rifle, a handgun, a cross-bow and a sword. Last summer, another Jones fan — a mother of three on Long Island, N.Y., named Nancy Genovese — was arrested for allegedly taking pictures of an Air National Guard base with firearms in her car. The charges were later dropped.

Jones’ critics say that by floating his highly-charged ideas at a time when the nation is already very angry and anxious, he’s upping the odds for unbalanced people to do stupid things.

“I’ve got to report the information I see and what I believe is happening,” he said. “I have a responsibility to put out.”

When asked if he’s worried about possibly-deranged people who listen to his show taking violent action, he went on the defensive.

“I knew when you guys called that this would be the crux of your interview and that’s fine because the government is going to stage more terror attacks like it did in 1995, like it did in 2001 and try to blame it on the American people,” he said.

The Other Side of Alex Jones

Despite his mistrust of the so-called mainstream media, Jones agreed to let “Nightline” into his world for a day. He operates out of an office in Austin, Texas. The exact address is kept a secret because fans tend to show up uninvited.

Around the office, Jones says he doesn’t allow his dim view of human nature to color his personal relationships. He jokes a lot with his staff — a group of unfailingly polite, mostly young men — often just seconds after loudly proclaiming doom on the air.

He’s also ebullient about his wife and their three young children, who are allowed to watch the show, until the subject matter gets too sinister. His seven-year old son already knows the word propaganda.

“The most important thing is he knows everybody has an agenda, including myself,” Jones said.

Jones got his start with a local cable access show in the 1990s. He now has a huge fan base, which includes celebrities like Willie Nelson, Jessie Ventura, Charlie Sheen, even Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag.

While he admits that some people may watch him purely for entertainment, he says the real reason for his recent growth is that the public increasingly mistrusts government. He does seem to have tapped into the dark national mood.

“This info was radical ten years ago. It isn’t radical now,” he said.

Does Jones Overstate His Case?

However, Jones sometimes seems to latch onto small pieces of information to prove his much larger, more sinister theories. During “Nightline’s” visit, he commented on an article on CNN.com:

“They recommend having a one-child policy in the US,” he said on the program, “So just hardcore draconian police state being proposed here in the US.”

I looked up the article, which was actually a fluffy, feature piece about a woman who wrote a semi-jokey book about having environmentally friendly sex. The only reference to a one-child policy was a sarcastic aside.

“It’s all sarcastic. They’re constantly supporting one-child policy. That’s what CNN’s pushing. And I have clips of CNN and FOX saying humans have too big a carbon footprint and we need to have a one-child policy.”

By the end of our time together, Jones was admitting to sometimes overstating his case about the entire government, and every corporation being corrupt.

“Certainly sometimes I do,” he says. “But overall I try to tell the facts as I see them.”

He says he actually hates his job and would love to stop his show if only the bankers would be put in the jail, the federal government made smaller, and all corrupt wars ended.

But he doesn’t see any of those things happening anytime soon. Until then, he says, it’s his duty to shake America out of its trance.

President Obama is playing “Watch the Birdie” with Americans over the age of 50, diverting their attention with handouts and scare tactics to hide in plain sight the enormous damage his policies are doing to the retirement safety net.

First it was Medicare. The ObamaCare legislation drops a few free goodies like breadcrumbs in front of Medicare recipients (such as free diagnostics and annual checkups) to draw their attention away from the enormous cuts in Medicare being used to help pay the freight for the new national healthcare system. Additionally, the White House has engineered a full-blown propaganda campaign, coordinated with the AARP, to deceive Medicare recipients and baby boomers about the magnitude and the implications of the $575 billion in Medicare cuts being used to help pay for ObamaCare. Even more deceitfully, using TV icon Andy Griffith in a taxpayer-funded TV ad to talk about how happy days are here again, the Obama Administration and its mouthpiece AARP are attempting to hoodwink people over the age of 50 about the inherent healthcare rationing sown into the very fabric of ObamaCare.

Medicare’s own Chief Actuary has already publicly reported that the Medicare payment rates for the doctors and hospitals serving retirees will be cut by 30 percent during the next three years. The details buried in the Medicare Trustees report reveal that still further Medicare cuts adopted in the ObamaCare legislation add up altogether to $818 billion during the first 10 years of full implementation, and $3.223 trillion during the first 20 years, just for Medicare’s hospital program (Part A, HI). Counting the cuts for Medicare physician reimbursement under the Part-B program brings the grand total in Medicare cuts to $1.048 trillion during the first full 10 years, and $4.95 trillion during the first 20 years.

Now the president is coming after Social Security.

In his Saturday radio address on August 14, President Obama revealed he is already moving on to cut Social Security.

But again, he is playing “Watch the Birdie,” this time using scare tactics rather than sweeteners.

In that address, he denounced the idea of solving Social Security’s problems by allowing young workers the freedom to voluntarily choose to save and invest some of their taxes in their own personal retirement accounts, an option federal employees already enjoy. The president rejects fixing the Bernie-Madoff Ponzi scheme currently used to finance Social Security with some form of personal accounts to begin pre-funding Social Security with real saving and investment. Instead, he rails about “privatization,” an incendiary (and false) characterization of voluntary personal retirement accounts intended to scare the bejeebers out of the American people.

President Obama knows that all these account proposals affect only younger workers and do not touch the benefits of today’s retirees or the baby boom generation soon to retire. Moreover, congressional proposals for voluntary personal accounts have maintained the safety net of Social Security, guaranteeing that workers would get at least as much as Social Security promises now.

So the question remains: What is the president up to?

How does he propose to solve Social Security’s long-term financial crisis, which even his own Presidential Debt Commission realizes is real? Without some form of real saving and investment for workers to begin prefunding their retirement, the only alternatives remaining are to raise payroll taxes or cut benefits—and that is precisely what President Obama’s Debt Commission is planning.

One might think raising payroll taxes is out because President Obama pledged over and over to get elected that he would not raise taxes on anyone making less than $250,000 a year. If he refuses even to consider personal accounts as inconsistent with his socialist ideology, he will never be able to deliver on that promise.

As to benefit cuts, this is exactly what the Presidential Debt Commission is plotting to reveal right after the November election. Former Sen. Alan Simpson, co-chairman of the Commission, tipped the Commission’s hand recently when he described Social Security as a “milk cow with 300 million tits.”

Leaks indicate that among the options being considered are delaying the retirement age (sounds like a panacea to bureaucratic pencil pushers who never did a day of hard labor in their lives), changing the basic benefit formula to reduce future benefits, and delaying or slashing COLAs.

Apparently, President Obama’s concept of spreading the wealth includes sacking both the Medicare and Social Security systems on which America’s retirees have come to rely. That’s some progressive vision of “fiscal responsibility:” Put seniors out in the cold and into an early grave.

On one of the highest hilltops in Elbert County, Georgia stands a huge granite monument. Engraved in eight different languages on the four giant stones that support the common capstone are 10 Guides, or commandments. That monument is alternately referred to as The Georgia Guidestones, or the American Stonehenge. Though relatively unknown to most people, it is an important link to the Occult Hierarchy that dominates the world in which we live.

The origin of that strange monument is shrouded in mystery because no one knows the true identity of the man, or men, who commissioned its construction. All that is known for certain is that in June 1979, a well-dressed, articulate stranger visited the office of the Elberton Granite Finishing Company and announced that he wanted to build an edifice to transmit a message to mankind. He identified himself as R. C. Christian, but it soon became apparent that was not his real name. He said that he represented a group of men who wanted to offer direction to humanity, but to date, almost two decades later, no one knows who R. C. Christian really was, or the names of those he represented. Several things are apparent. The messages engraved on the Georgia Guidestones deal with four major fields: (1) Governance and the establishment of a world government, (2) Population and reproduction control, (3) The environment and man’s relationship to nature, and (4) Spirituality.

In the public library in Elberton, I found a book written by the man who called himself R.C. Christian. I discovered that the monument he commissioned had been erected in recognition of Thomas Paine and the occult philosophy he espoused. Indeed, the Georgia Guidestones are used for occult ceremonies and mystic celebrations to this very day. Tragically, only one religious leader in the area had the courage to speak out against the American Stonehenge, and he has recently relocated his ministry.

THE MESSAGE OF THE GEORGIA GUIDESTONES

1. Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature.
2. Guide reproduction wisely – improving fitness and diversity.
3. Unite humanity with a living new language.
4. Rule passion – faith – tradition – and all things with tempered reason.
5. Protect people and nations with fair laws and just courts.
6. Let all nations rule internally resolving external disputes in a world court.
7. Avoid petty laws and useless officials.
8. Balance personal rights with social duties.
9. Prize truth – beauty – love – seeking harmony with the infinite.
10.Be not a cancer on the earth – Leave room for nature – Leave room for nature.

Limiting the population of the earth to 500 million will require the extermination of nine-tenths of the world’s people. The American Stonehenge’s reference to establishing a world court foreshadows the current move to create an International Criminal Court and a world government. The Guidestones’ emphasis on preserving nature anticipates the environmental movement of the 1990s, and the reference to “seeking harmony with the infinite” reflects the current effort to replace Judeo-Christian beliefs with a new spirituality.

The message of the American Stonehenge also foreshadowed the current drive for Sustainable Development. Any time you hear the phrase “Sustainable Development” used, you should substitute the term “socialism” to be able to understand what is intended. Later in this syllabus you will read the full text of the Earth Charter which was compiled under the direction of Mikhail Gorbachev and Maurice Strong. In that document you will find an emphasis on the same basic issues: control of reproduction, world governance, the importance of nature and the environment, and a new spirituality. The similarity between the ideas engraved on the Georgia Guidestones and those espoused in the Earth Charter reflect the common origins of both.

Yoko Ono, the widow of John Lennon, was recently quoted as referring to the American Stonehenge, saying:

“I want people to know about the stones … We’re headed toward a world where we might blow ourselves up and maybe the globe will not exist … it’s a nice time to reaffirm ourselves, knowing all the beautiful things that are in this country and the Georgia Stones symbolize that. ” (1)

What is the true significance of the American Stonehenge, and why is its covert message important? Because it confirms the fact that there was a covert group intent on

(1) Dramatically reducing the population of the world.
(2) Promoting environmentalism.
(3) Establishing a world government.
(4) Promoting a new spirituality.

Certainly the group that commissioned the Georgia Guidestones is one of many similar groups working together toward a New World Order, a new world economic system, and a new world spirituality. Behind those groups, however, are dark spiritual forces. Without understanding the nature of those dark forces it is impossible to understand the unfolding of world events.

The fact that most Americans have never heard of the Georgia Guidestones or their message to humanity reflects the degree of control that exists today over what the American people think. We ignore that message at our peril.

Mitochondrial DNA Places Her Existence At About 200,000 Years Ago

A maternal ancestor to all living humans called mitochondrial Eve likely lived about 200,000 years ago, at roughly the same time anatomically modern humans are believed to have emerged, a new review study confirms.

The results are based on analyses of mitochondrial DNA. Found in the energy-producing centers of cells, mitochondrial DNA is only passed down the maternal line, and can be traced back to one woman.

However, this doesn’t mean she was the first modern woman, rather it indicates that only her descendants survive to the present day.

“There is always some other female that predated mitochondrial Eve, whose DNA didn’t make it up to modernity,” said Marek Kimmel, a professor of statistics at Rice University. “So the age of the mitochondrial Eve is always less than the age of the true, first female modern human.”

A molecular clock
While most of an organism’s DNA is contained in the nuclei of its cells, mitochondria also contain genetic material, but much less of it, making it easier to analyze. Mitochondrial DNA contains a region that changes rapidly and can provide a sort of molecular clock calibrated to times comparable to the age of modern humanity, making it a favorite for population geneticists, Kimmel said.

As part of the three-year project, Kimmel and Krzysztof Cyran, a Polish researcher, compared the estimates produced by about 10 genetic models intended to determine when mitochondrial Eve lived. They started with data on mitochondrial DNA previously collected from random blood donors.

Scientists know the average rate of mutation, so they can look at the genetic variation among pairs of individuals to see when their lineages diverged. But the equation becomes more complicated.

“Mutation is producing divergence, but some of the divergence is lost because of random events that occur, for example some populations become extinct,” Kimmel said. As ancient modern humans dispersed, some groups settled and grew, while others became extinct.

The models make different assumptions about growth and extinction rates, which had the potential to change the estimate of mitochondrial Eve’s age, the researchers found. One type of model makes the less realistic, but more manageable assumption that the human population has increased at a smooth, nearly exponential rate. Another more realistic, but more technically challenging type of model assumes the human population has grown in discrete random episodes.

An agreement
But, regardless, all of the models produced estimates placing this ancient mother’s age at around 200,000 years.

“We actually show if one uses different models, one comes up with a very similar estimate, so this makes the estimate more robust,” Kimmel said.

The estimates produced by models that assume population growth occurred in discrete, random bursts fell within 10 percent of each other. When taking into consideration models that assumed smooth growth, that range expanded by up to 20 percent. These models also tended to estimate that mitochondrial Eve lived earlier, according to Kimmel.

The research was published in June in the journal Theoretical Population Biology.

The balloons Carol Kane will tie to a Framingham Centre signpost Thursday pay tribute to her great-aunt Josephine Collins.

The colors pay tribute to Lydia Taft of Uxbridge, Augusta Cheney of Natick, Louisa May Alcott of Concord, the “Women Taxpayers” of Milford, fellow Framingham resident Louise Parker Mayo, and the thousands of other local women who shared in Collins’ goal.

White, gold and purple symbolize the suffragette movement that brought voting rights to all American women 90 years ago, when Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th Amendment on Aug. 18, 1920, and it became the law of the land on Aug. 26.

The 90th anniversary “serves as a reminder of both the lengthy struggle that preceded it, and the relatively short period of time that women in the United States have been fully enfranchised,” said Anita Danker, a Framingham resident and retired Assumption College associate professor of education.

“I think that Massachusetts women had a more visible presence during the first wave – Lucy Stone, Lydia Maria Child, Abby Kelley Foster and Lucretia Mott were among the most prominent,” said Danker. “In 1850, the National Woman’s Rights Convention was held in Worcester, and Susan B. Anthony herself was born in Adams.”

And a century before the mid-1800s “first wave,” Lydia Taft of Uxbridge became the first woman to cast a vote.

Her husband, Josiah, a military officer and Uxbridge’s largest taxpayer, died in 1756, “immediately prior to an important vote on the town’s support for the war effort in the French and Indian Wars. Josiah’s untimely death opened the door for Lydia’s step into America’s history of women’s suffrage,” Taft’s Wikipedia entry notes. The men of Uxbridge voted to give her Josiah’s proxy, and she voted to increase the town’s contribution to the war effort.

“Over half a century later, another Blackstone Valley woman, Abby Kelley Foster, who belonged to the Quaker Meeting at Uxbridge, would lead two later famous suffragists,” Anthony and Stone, “into the anti-slavery movement,” according to Wikipedia. Foster was also noted for refusing to pay property taxes before her death in 1887 because she didn’t have the right to vote.

Eyes on the prize

Augusta Cheney, daughter of the Rev. Horatio Alger Sr., founded the Women’s Suffrage Club of Natick in 1877.

“In 1881, the club succeeded in putting an article on the warrant for Town Meeting proposing that women be given the right to vote in local elections and hold town offices,” Natick resident James Morley writes in his history of the Eliot Church, “From Many Backgrounds.”

“The Town Meeting members were all men, of course. The motion was rejected. In 1882 it was put again. Again it was rejected.” Even after it failed in 1883, “the women were not daunted.” They fought, and won, a measure of equality as full members of the Unitarian Parish that year.

“Augusta kept hammering away at the men for the rest of her life,” Morley writes. In an 1896 column Cheney wrote for The Natick Bulletin, “she took no prisoners.”

“Home is not the place for every woman,” Cheney wrote. “If a woman can do more for her fellows by a public life (and many can), then it is her duty to live her life for the public; if she can do more at home, then her duty is there, and the same will apply to men. There are many men today who would do the country immeasurable good if they would sink into oblivion.”

Concord’s Abigail May Alcott authored a petition to change the state constitution and grant equal political rights to women in 1853, and in 1880, her daughter, “Louisa May Alcott and 19 other women attended the Concord Town Meeting,” massmoments.org reports.

“The year before, the Massachusetts Legislature had made it legal for women to vote in school committee elections. … The author of ‘Little Women’ was the first woman in Concord to register to vote.

“She rallied the other women to exercise the limited franchise they had been given,” and when their votes had been cast, “she later reported, ‘No bolt fell on our audacious heads, no earthquake shook the town.’ ”

But three years after Alcott’s triumphant Town Meeting vote, only seven women cast votes for school board candidates in Concord.

In Wayland, “women served on the school committee before the turn of the 20th century,” said Jane Sciacca, president of the Wayland Historical Society, and the town had its share of suffrage sympathizers, “in particular, a Mrs. (Walter) Henderson.”

The Wayland Woman’s Club records from a March 1915 meeting at Henderson’s home, held eight months before the state legislature was to vote on the issue, “the afternoon was devoted to consideration of the equal suffrage question from the point of view of an Anti.”

“In spite of its leading role in the 19th-century women’s rights movement, Massachusetts was the first state to organize an association of women opposed to suffrage,” a Mass Moments article states. “Known as the ‘Antis,’ these women believed that they could be better, more effective citizens without the ballot. Many of the Antis were active in Progressive era causes; they feared that involvement in electoral politics would erode their influence.”

Massachusetts was also home to many Catholics, “and while the Church took no official position, strongly worded statements by leading clerics were issued in opposition to the proposed bill,” author Eleanor Flexner writes in her book, “Century of Struggle.”

Dorchester native Margaret Foley, a working-class Irish Catholic, was not among those swayed by anti-suffrage sentiment.

Foley’s “in-your-face tactics” didn’t always sit well with the “largely middle-class leadership of Boston’s suffragist movement,” a Dorchester history website notes, but she did help Nevada women win the vote a year she addressed a large rally in Milford’s Draper Park in July 1915.

Western states and territories were more open to female voters. In 1890, Wyoming was admitted to the Union as the first state to allow women full suffrage. Colorado women were enfranchised in 1893. Utah followed in 1895.

“The suffrage issue was due to come before the Massachusetts Legislature in November 1915,” said Framingham resident Libby Franck, who is researching the era for her upcoming performance of Collins’ “journey in the fight for a woman’s right to vote.”

“The Suffrage Parade in Boston on Oct. 16 was magnificent; 9,000 women marched; the spectators were well behaved. Yet despite this beautiful spectacle orchestrated by Alice Paul, the measure failed to pass.”

Jailed for the cause

Framingham’s Collins and Mayo “represented countless women throughout the country who interrupted their everyday lives to be a part of history,” said Danker.

“Thousands of American women fought the battle for the vote. Hundreds of them were jailed and 168 received the suffrage pins. Framingham is honored to have been home to two of them,” said Franck, whose Framingham History Center performance is planned Sunday, Sept. 26.

Mayo, the mother of five boys and two girls, left the family’s Nixon Road farmhouse in July 1917 to picket at the White House.

“My grandfather, a tall Abraham Lincoln type, said ‘Go ahead,’ ” said Jean Trifero, a Nantucket resident who spent much of her childhood with her grandparents, Louise and William. “He knew if that’s what she was going to do, she would do it.”

Mayo was among 17 women protesters arrested and sentenced to 60 days in jail. She was pardoned and released after serving two days, but her actions earned her a silver jail-door pin from the National Woman’s Party.

“I always have an awful lot of pride in what she accomplished,” Trifero said of the woman known to solve math problems for fun and drive “the school barge,” a horse-drawn conveyance that ferried students in the days before buses.

Her grandmother’s passion for equality included her belief that “college was the goal for everyone. I think only one son didn’t go. My mother and my aunt did,” said Trifero.

Collins, who was single, owned a teahouse in Framingham Centre and managed the family business, Collins Market, while her brother served in World War I.

Teahouses, such as the one Collins ran, “were all the rage in that era and were frequently patronized by suffragists,” said Franck. “I also discovered the Nobscot Mountain Farm Tea House near the Wayside Inn in South Sudbury. Now a private home for sale, I visited it and envisioned suffragists from Framingham sipping tea and muffins there when it was in operation in 1917.”

Collins “also had a dry goods shop, after the teahouse,” said Kane. “It was that business that was impacted my her ‘militant’ activities. Husbands would not let their wives shop there” because she had spent eight days in the Charles Street jail after joining a suffrage demonstration during President Woodrow Wilson’s visit to Boston in 1919.

“Aunt Jo was the backbone of her family,” said Kane. “She was generous and cared for all. She made sure my mother had an education and financed her schooling,” as well as paying for her niece to attend summer camp. “She also got my mother her first pair of long pants,” the Framingham native said.

“The fact that I know these things, the fact that my mother shared all those memories with me so long after Aunt Jo was gone, just demonstrates the impact this one woman had.

“Of course, I knew from a young age the impact Josephine Collins had on women’s rights. She made extreme sacrifices to improve the lives of women going forward,” Kane said.

“Our town has much to be proud of,” said Franck.

Framingham was also the site of a 1909 suffrage rally in Irving Square, and noted sculptor and local resident Meta Warrick Fuller was a member of the Equal Suffrage League.

The first voters

Milford’s first woman to cast a ballot in a presidential election was Grace Nugent, wife of Selectman T.J. Nugent, the Milford Daily News reported on Nov. 2, 1920, and “not a single (woman) found any difficulty in voting” when 1,500 of the 3,800 town voters were female, and Warren Harding defeated James Cox.

In a letter to the editor published Feb. 17, 1921, a group identified as “Women Taxpayers” laid out their vision for their first town election in the spring:

“All we ask are clean upright men to conduct our affairs; our taxes levied equitably and justly; our schools and library maintained at a high standard; our beautiful parks kept clean and orderly; our streets kept clean and in good repair; our youth protected from pernicious influences such as gambling or the semblance of a saloon; our police department an efficient body of men; and each town official carry on his work all the more efficiently.”

Wayland’s Sophia Sears wasn’t quite as starry-eyed about her first encounter with democracy at Town Meeting in 1921.

“I was embarrassed to tears,” Sears told the Wayland Town Crier in 1971.

“She merely went along with her husband … because he assured her all the other women in town would be there,” the Crier reported. “They weren’t and she was the only woman in the hall.”

“The moderator introduced me, said he was honored to have me there and everyone clapped,” said Sears. “All the other women in town were home washing dishes and doing their duty, I guess.”

Hear us roar?

“For six decades after women obtained the right to vote in 1920, they voted at lower rates than men,” Rutgers professor Susan Carroll said in a report posted on the university’s Center for American Women and Politics site.

In 1980, both 59 percent of American men and 59 percent of American women reported taking part in elections, according to U.S. Census data that represents “voting and registration estimates alongside various demographic characteristics.”

While the percentage of women has been slightly higher than men in each post-1980 Census survey, both sexes are less likely to vote than in 1964, when 71 percent of male and 67 percent of female voters said they cast a ballot. In 2008, the figures were 56 percent for men and 60 percent for women.

The Massachusetts Secretary of State’s office doesn’t have a breakdown of voters by gender, a spokesman said, nor do local town clerks surveyed.

“We don’t pay attention to who votes” in regard to gender, said Hopkinton Town Clerk Ann Click.

Those who followed in the pioneering footsteps of state Reps. Susan Fitzgerald, D-Jamaica Plain, and Sylvia Donaldson, R-Brockton, who went to Beacon Hill in 1923, also said they aren’t aware of differences in the number of men and women who cast ballots these days.

“It seems to be 50-50 when I’m standing outside” a polling place, said state Sen. Karen Spilka, D-Ashland.

State Rep. Pam Richardson, D-Framingham, said that’s been her experience as well, and “of the volunteers that are helping me, I think it’s 50-50.”

But, said Richardson, “we still have a long way to go as far as equal representation. More men than women run for public office. More men than women hold public office.”

That might change in coming years.

“I’ve been impressed by the number of women applying for internships” at the State House, said state Rep. Carolyn Dykema, D-Holliston.

“We’ve come a long way, but we’re not there yet,” said Spilka.

“I think it’s something we take for granted,” she said of the right to vote, “but that was an amazing thing that the women of that generation did.”

“I go up to the Mayo-Collins Square every Aug. 26 and put white, gold and purple, the suffrage colors, balloons on the sign that bears (Collins’) name,” said Kane.

“And I write ‘Votes for Women’ on the balloons.”

As the subject of intense press scrutiny about her personal life, actress Jennifer Aniston is speaking out about her thoughts on motherhood.

When talking about her new film “The Switch,” about a woman who decides to get pregnant with a sperm donor, Aniston defended women who make the decision to have a baby when they are ready, regardless of their relationship status.

“Women are realizing it more and more knowing that they don’t have to settle with a man just to have that child,” Aniston said at a press conference Sunday. “Times have changed and that is also what is amazing is that we do have so many options these days, as opposed to our parents’ days when you can’t have children because you waited too long.”

Aniston added that she does not feel that there are any restrictions on what type of family can raise a healthy child

“The point of the movie is what is it that defines family? It isn’t necessarily the traditional mother, father, two children and a dog named Spot,” she said. “Love is love and family is what is around you and who is in your immediate sphere. That is what I love about this movie. It is saying it is not the traditional sort of stereotype of what we have been taught as a society of what family is.”

The actress added that she still wants to be a mom, but said she won’t be going the route of her character, who uses a turkey baster. But the U.K. Daily Mail quoted the actress as saying of parenthood that she is “on the verge of it in some way … it’s something I long for.”

On Dec. 10, 1974, the U.S. National Security Council under Henry Kissinger completed a classified 200-page study, “National Security Study Memorandum 200: Implications of Worldwide Population Growth for U.S. Security and Overseas Interests.” The study falsely claimed that population growth in the so-called Lesser Developed Countries (LDCs) was a grave threat to U.S. national security. Adopted as official policy in November 1975 by President Gerald Ford, NSSM 200 outlined a covert plan to reduce population growth in those countries through birth control, and also, implicitly, war and famine. Brent Scowcroft, who had by then replaced Kissinger as national security adviser (the same post Scowcroft was to hold in the Bush administration), was put in charge of implementing the plan. CIA Director George Bush was ordered to assist Scowcroft, as were the secretaries of state, treasury, defense, and agriculture.

The bogus arguments that Kissinger advanced were not original. One of his major sources was the Royal Commission on Population, which King George VI had created in 1944 “to consider what measures should be taken in the national interest to influence the future trend of population.” The commission found that Britain was gravely threatened by population growth in its colonies, since “a populous country has decided advantages over a sparsely-populated one for industrial production.” The combined effects of increasing population and industrialization in its colonies, it warned, “might be decisive in its effects on the prestige and influence of the West,” especially effecting “military strength and security.”

NSSM 200 similarly concluded that the United States was threatened by population growth in the former colonial sector. It paid special attention to 13 “key countries” in which the United States had a “special political and strategic interest”: India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Turkey, Nigeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia. It claimed that population growth in those states was especially worrisome, since it would quickly increase their relative political, economic, and military strength.

For example, Nigeria: “Already the most populous country on the continent, with an estimated 55 million people in 1970, Nigeria’s population by the end of this century is projected to number 135 million. This suggests a growing political and strategic role for Nigeria, at least in Africa.” Or Brazil: “Brazil clearly dominated the continent demographically.” The study warned of a “growing power status for Brazil in Latin America and on the world scene over the next 25 years.”

Food as a weapon

There were several measures that Kissinger advocated to deal with this alleged threat, most prominently, birth control and related population-reduction programs. He also warned that “population growth rates are likely to increase appreciably before they begin to decline,” even if such measures were adopted.

A second measure was curtailing food supplies to targetted states, in part to force compliance with birth control policies: “There is also some established precedent for taking account of family planning performance in appraisal of assistance requirements by AID [U.S. Agency for International Development] and consultative groups. Since population growth is a major determinant of increases in food demand, allocation of scarce PL 480 resources should take account of what steps a country is taking in population control as well as food production. In these sensitive relations, however, it is important in style as well as substance to avoid the appearance of coercion.”

“Mandatory programs may be needed and we should be considering these possibilities now,” the document continued, adding, “Would food be considered an instrument of national power? … Is the U.S. prepared to accept food rationing to help people who can’t/won’t control their population growth?”

Kissinger also predicted a return of famines that could make exclusive reliance on birth control programs unnecessary. “Rapid population growth and lagging food production in developing countries, together with the sharp deterioration in the global food situation in 1972 and 1973, have raised serious concerns about the ability of the world to feed itself adequately over the next quarter of century and beyond,” he reported.

The cause of that coming food deficit was not natural, however, but was a result of western financial policy: “Capital investments for irrigation and infrastucture and the organization requirements for continuous improvements in agricultural yields may be beyond the financial and administrative capacity of many LDCs. For some of the areas under heaviest population pressure, there is little or no prospect for foreign exchange earnings to cover constantly increasingly imports of food.”

“It is questionable,” Kissinger gloated, “whether aid donor countries will be prepared to provide the sort of massive food aid called for by the import projections on a long-term continuing basis.” Consequently, “large-scale famine of a kind not experienced for several decades—a kind the world thought had been permanently banished,” was foreseeable—famine, which has indeed come to pass.
